The gifts piled up for weeks. For a while, they even stretched out along the wall.
But while the gifts were under one of our several office Christmas trees, they weren’t for anyone here at Socious. They were for children in our community.
The presents were part of our holiday gift drive for families in need, something that’s become an annual event at Socious. 2016 is the third year we’ve held the gift drive, with the past two years’ gifts going to a single family in need.
We not only provided a family with gifts, but with essentials as well. That meant collecting and purchasing everything from toys for children to appliances and beds, all of which was delivered to the family we were sponsoring before the holidays.
This year we’re shaking things up in order to reach more people in the community. Instead of sponsoring a single family, we’re sponsoring children from multiple families in one of our local school districts.
The idea was proposed by team members right here at Socious and spearheaded by Erica Allen, our Director of Events and Meetings. Erica’s mother-in-law works for the Tempe School District and heads up a program to provide the school district’s children with gifts every holiday season.
It was through Erica’s connection that we became a regular part of the Tempe School District’s holiday gift drive, making this a cause that’s close to our hearts.
Since we’re sponsoring multiple children this year, we received several dozen angel tags listing gifts for children of various ages. Each tag was hung on the Christmas tree in the center of our office. Over the last few weeks employees have stopped by to take a tag and in the next few days the tag is returned with an attached gift.
Every tag disappeared from the tree and was returned with several weeks to spare before the holidays. Once we collected all our gifts, four of our team members went to personally distribute them to children in Tempe School District’s disadvantaged neighborhoods.
“You’re like Santa,” said Erica, who has been part of the Socious team delivering gifts this year as well as several past years.
For Erica and our other employees at Socious, brightening the holidays for local families who are going through difficult times is incredibly rewarding.
It also meets a core Socious value: giving back. We regularly host programs that allow us to contribute to our community, such as our recent Thanksgiving food drive. We also plan volunteer outings several times a year, including two trips to Feed My Starving Children in 2016.
We’re looking forward to more volunteer trips to local nonprofits next year, along with finding new ways to contribute to our community. If you have anything planned for your organization, or have done any rewarding projects, we’d love to hear about them.
From everyone here at Socious, happy holidays.
